Once again, I explore the Anacostia neighborhood in Washington, DC. If you mention Anacostia to most Washingtonians, thoughts of crime, addiction, teen pregnancy, welfare mothers, public housing and unemployment come to mind. Get to know the residents and the objective eye sees something quite different. Anacostia's affordable housing, convenient location and old fashioned, neighborly spirit allows many women the opportunity to rebuild lives while strengthening their family and community. As caregivers, bread winners, educators, students, business and community leaders, each generation supports the other and smoothes the path for the future. The struggles, determination, alliances and successes of these unassuming women spearhead the momentous revitalization of Anacostia.
